Minimally
invasive vein
surgery is just that…surgery. For that reason you should always
consider getting a second opinion from an experienced surgeon to
ensure the correct diagnosis has been made. The wrong diagnosis
can lead to the wrong procedure, resulting in inferior results and
possibly a second procedure being necessary.
Unless
your doctor is a board certified surgeon, he does not have the
skills and experience gained through a surgical career to perform
these surgical procedures and handle the possible, though rare,
surgical complications.
Here
is a list of some questions you should ask during your
consultation with the surgeon to ensure you receive the best
possible care and results.
Ask
your doctor if he is a trained surgeon.
Ask
your doctor how many laser closures of veins he has performed. If
he does not perform at least 100 cases per year, a complimentary
second opinion by our office is a very good idea.
Ask
your doctor if he is dedicated to vein surgery or merely adds this
as a “sideline” to a non-vein practice.
Ask
your doctor if he will remove your varicose veins at the same time
as the laser closure of your saphenous vein. This removal is
performed under local anesthesia and can take over 1 hour. It
should be performed during the same procedure both to save you
another surgery and to guarantee that the veins you went to him
for are gone at the end of your surgery.
Ask
your doctor if he follows up with you following surgery at 2 days,
1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and yearly thereafter.
Ask your doctor if he is available after your procedure day and
night for any problems or questions and if he will see you that
day or night if needed.
Many
doctors can offer the laser closure vein procedure, but the best
results and care come from 35 years of surgical experience and the
sole dedication to the treatment of varicose and spider veins.
